Birth certificates in Latvia are registered by Civil Registry Offices, based on the law on registration of civil status in the Republic of Latvia dated April 15, 2005 (Published in Gazette No. 52, April 01, 2005). Chapter 4 of this law contains such information as:
1. The process of notifying the Civil Registry Office body about a birth.
2. Registration of the act of birth by the authorities of Civil Registry Office.
3. Contents of the birth certificate. The birth certificate must contain such information as: child’s surname and name, personal number (if available), gender, citizenship, nationality, place of residence. The same information is indicated for parents in the birth certificate of their child. In addition, the serial number of the document is assigned, the time and place of birth are recorded, the body that registered the document and on the basis of which documents (parents’ passports, hospital certificate) is indicated.
