In 2019, 27,4 thousand people were born in Lithuania. Compared to 2018, the number of newborns decreased by 756 people, or 2,7%. From 2010 to 2019, 298 thousand people were born in Lithuania, while boys are 8 thousand or 5.5% more than girls.
In 2019, the crude birth rate was 1.61. In 2018 this rate was 1.63. The most favorable demographic balance for the generational change is when the total fertility rate balances around 2.1.
The number of first-borns alive was 45,6%, and the second children were 38,9%. In 2018 this indicator was 44,3% and 40,0% respectively. The share of the third and the subsequent babies in the total number of live births decreased from 15,6% in 2018 to 15,4% in 2019.
7,4 thousand live-born children were born from parents who did not register their marriage.
In 2019 24,1 thousand or 88,1% of babies were born in Lithuania. Beyond the borders of the Republic of Lithuania 3,3 thousand of children or 11,9% were born from Lithuanian citizens. Most of the children born abroad were born in Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway and Ireland.
The average age of the birthing women in 2019 was 30 years old.

The live birth means the birth of the baby with breathing or other signs of life, such as palpitations, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or clear voluntary muscle activity, regardless of gestational age.
